The Christian Education Department

The Christian Education Department of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church was created for the promotion and supervision of the Christian training and development of the entire membership of the denomination.

Founded in 1887, the Christian Education Department (CED) of the Afircan Methodist Episcopal Zion Church provides supervision, guidance, direction and programmatic support of the Christian training and nurture of children, youth, and yound adults throughout the A.M.E. Zion Cuhrch. Often described as a "cradle to the grave" ministry, Christian Education supports Christian development in homes, churches, camps as well as church-related schools, colleges and seminaries.

The Christian Education Department offers workshops, seminars, conferences and conventions that help develop effective skills in Christian Educators and those striving for a closer walk with the Lord. It also establishes curriculum and other standards to support Christian Education programs at every level of the church.

The department is organized into two divisions-the School and College Division and the HOme and Church Division.

The Home and Church Division includes Varick's Children; Youth Ministries; Young Adult Ministries; Adult Ministries and Church School Literature. The Church School Editorial Section includes Church School Literature and operates under the auspices of the Home and Church Division of the Christian Education Department (CED).

Our Ministries

Stewards and Trustees
Sis. Sandra Govan, Preacher’s Steward/Chair

The focus of the Steward Board is to be accountable for the financial obligations of the church including funds received - tithes, offerings, and contributions made to the church. The board works to ensure the stewardship and distribution of church resources, edify the congregation, provide support to the Pastor and her family, and provide relief for the needy and distressed members of the church.

Trustee Board
Sis. Myrtle Shaw, Chair of the Trustee Board

The mission is to take charge of care, maintenance, and security of church property. They initiate necessary improvements to the church and maintain order and the proper decorum to be observed throughout God’s house of worship.

Stewardess Board
Sis. Marlene Middleton, President

The mission is to assist the Preacher’s Steward in making provision for the support and comfort of the Pastor and his family.

Deaconess Board

The mission is to prepare for the sacraments of Holy Communion and Baptism. The Deaconess Board’s main concern is mercy, both within and without the church. The Deaconess Board assists the Pastor in ministering to the sick and shut-in.

Men’s Ministry
Bro. Charlton Davenport, First Gentleman/President

Caldwell Temple Men’s Ministry promotes strength in Manhood through creating faith-based space for the mission of authentic manhood in becoming more like Christ. Men who may have been rejected are welcomed into the ministry promoting acceptance, responsibility and accountability. The Men’s Ministry is to call men to lead courageously and accept the greater reward: God’s love!

Proverbs 27:17, “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens the face of his neighbor.”

The Men’s Ministry is dedicated to reach more men and boys inside and outside the walls of the church. Our focus is not male dominance but rather to revive the male presence within the church.

The vision of the ministry:

  • Relational
  • Transformational
  • Mission Focused
  • Generational

Ushers

Psalm 84:10 says, “I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness.” The Ushers are more than doorkeepers at Caldwell Temple A.M.E. ZIon Church, they are responsible to create the welcoming environment and set the tone for how one enters worship. They are responsible to greet people as they arrive for the service, assist people with special needs and guide the offering. They are here to help!
